Applied Materials, the biggest supplier of semiconductor fabrication equipment, appears on an MSN Money list of recommended stocks.

Investors have flocked to companies in the fast-growing markets for tablet computers and solar panels, as well as flat-panel displays for TVs and other consumer electronics. Applied Materials (AMAT, news) has a prominent stake in all three.

The Silicon Valley company provides the machines that make semiconductor wafers and chips, solar photovoltaic cells, liquid crystal displays and other products.
Shares in the company are up 16.6% this year, boosted by positive forecasts from the likes of iPad maker Apple (AAPL, news), computer-chip maker Intel (INTC, news) and LCD glass producer Corning (GLW, news), as well as the continued expansion of China's solar-energy market.
